Oregon Coast Aquarium - Fun Under The Sea

Keiko at the Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is something that I really enjoyed going to on one of my recent trips to Newport. The price of admission is well-worth all the educational and entertainment value you're going to get out of it.

As soon as you enter, you're entertained by all kinds of facts about various things and creatures along the Oregon coast. You simply cannot come out of here without learning something new.

The Aquarium habitats are both inside and outside, so there is a lot of room to wander. Tanks of exotic fish, eels, crustaceans, sea birds, otters, jelly fish, sea lions and a lot more await you as you make your way through the aquarium and around the grounds. The Oregon Coast Aquarium boasts one of the largest marine aviaries in the Pacific NW. You'll love watching the many types of sea birds throughout that exhibit.

Oregon Coast Aquarium Jelly FishJust FYI, this is where they kept the world-famous killer whale, Keiko, who starred in all the Free Willy films. We're pretty proud of that. ;)

My favorite part of my whole time there was weaving my way through the 200 ft acrylic tunnels, known as the Passages of the Deep. These are huge glass enclosures that you tunnel through, watching fish, sharks and other sea creatures swim around you. Each individual tube has it's own motif, so you're always experiencing something different.

The Aquarium offers all types of youth and student programs to get children involved in conservation and looking after the beasties of the sea, to make sure that they're around for their own kids. All the programs they offer are pretty cool.

They also have many ways for you to get involved with the aquarium. There is no government cash Oregon Coast Aquarium open sea tunnelsupporting the ongoing efforts, so they rely heavily on contributions and admissions. You can volunteer, adopt-a-pet, buy-a-brick and become a card-carrying member of the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. As an ongoing member, you get a years free admission, newsletters, discounts throughout the place and more. Plus, you're helping support a very worthy cause....the feeding and care of the animals.
